Given the advent of so much new technology in the classroom today we, as instructors, must be aware of the Acceptable Use Policy in our district, and also be one step ahead of any potential problems that could arise from the improper use of technology in the classroom. In our school grades 5-7 have been given the option of getting Ipads, or they can opt for a B.Y.O.D. for use in the classroom on a daily basis. The problem arises when the students misuse these devices during regular class activities. This could be as simple as using their devices to bully each other on social media, or to post a undesirable photo without permission of the photo's subject.
As instructors we need to be very aware of our districts policy toward this type of behavior and as a method to preclude this behavior we need to either find a way of implicitly making the students aware that certain digital behavior is unacceptable or explicitly if the need arises. I think the implementation of www.remind.com may be one of the ways to keep the students on track, but also model correct behavior and digital expectations. It can also be used to keep the parents engaged as to dissuade improper use of devices in the classroom.
